Although ring size may seem like just a single number, a comfortable fit can vary depending on the time of day, temperature, finger structure, and the ring's form. Therefore, instead of a quick measurement, carefully and repeatedly applying the same method provides a more reliable starting point.
Choose the right time
Fingers react to temperature and daily activity. They may appear thinner in very cold conditions, and more swollen in warm weather or after intense activity. Take the measurement at a comfortable room temperature, when your hands are in their usual state. Do not consider a result final if your fingers are unusually cold, swollen, or sensitive.
Repeating the same measurement at another time of day helps you see if there's a significant change. If the results are far apart, re-check the measurement conditions instead of forcing a single value.
Measuring the inner diameter of an existing ring
If you have a ring that fits comfortably on the finger you intend to wear it on, measuring its inner diameter can be a practical reference. It's important that the ring's circular shape is intact and that it genuinely feels comfortable on the finger to be measured.
Place the ring on a flat surface. Position a ruler or a precise measuring tool from one inner edge to the opposite inner edge, passing through the center. Measure the widest straight distance of the void, not the metal itself. Double-check that the starting point is at zero and that the tool remains in the same plane as the ring.
If you need help with a photo, image the ring and measuring tool from directly above, minimizing perspective as much as possible. An oblique angle can make the inner diameter appear different from what it actually is.
Measuring finger circumference
If you don't have a suitable ring, a non-stretchy, thin strip of paper can be used. Wrap the strip around the base of the finger without constricting the skin and mark where it meets. Open the strip flat on a surface and measure the distance between the marks. Flexible string or rubber-like materials can distort the result as they can stretch.
The strip should be close enough to stay in place, but not leave a mark on the skin. Also, remember that the ring must pass over the knuckle. If the knuckle is significantly wider than the base of the finger, it's useful to measure both areas.
Between two sizes
If your measurement falls between two options, consider the feeling of wear. A ring that is too loose can rotate or slip off; a ring that is too tight can cause discomfort when passing over the knuckle. While there's a general observation that wide bands can feel tighter, the band width and size options for every product at Nilya have not yet been individually verified. Therefore, a single general rule is not provided for each product.
Record your measurement
Instead of just keeping the result in mind, note down the method you used, the time of measurement, and any repeated values. If you used an existing ring, also write down which finger it felt comfortable on. This way, if you see a different result later, you can compare the conditions.
The same fingers on the right and left hand may not always have the same circumference. Determine from the start which hand and which finger you will wear the ring on. Referring to someone else's ring can be misleading due to differences in finger structure and wearing preferences.
Repeating the measurement on another day makes it easier to distinguish temporary temperature or activity effects. Consistent results provide a more solid reference for selection.
Why no conversion table?
When numerically matching different sizing systems, the reliability of the source and the clarity of the standard used must be ensured. Printable tools, whose physical scale is not guaranteed, can also produce erroneous results depending on printer settings. For this reason, Nilya does not offer an unverified table or printable ring sizer.
